The special guest on our latest edition of The Talk Show, Dr Erin Thompson, shared some invaluable insights on helpful and not-so-helpful ways to talk about grief.
Erin founded The Loss Foundation – a charity that creates safe spaces for people who’ve lost their loved ones to cancer, to talk and share their experiences without judgement or advice.
It’s proved a highly effective approach from which thousands of people here in the UK and across the world have benefitted.
The interview was rich in experience and practical wisdom and a lively Q&A followed. You can watch the recording here.
Why not you?
And it left me thinking that anyone can create a safe space for those around them to talk about anything, at any time. It doesn’t have to be about grief. It can be a family matter, a work issue, religion – politics even!
It’s simply a choice you make in that moment to park your own view and strive to understand the person in front of you – without judgement, criticism or advice. And it’s not that hard.
If advice is necessary that can come later.
But the gift of your attention and understanding is a solid first step towards building a stronger connection – and a safer space – in which people can really talk.
